What other city can match the glories of the Three Graces along the waterfront? Inland there are monumental Egyptian ventilation shafts, banking palaces, dock warehouses, and the finest neo-Classical hall in the country. Oh, and two Cathedrals.

Manchester.

There is nothing to equal it since the building of Venice,” said the Builder magazine about Manchester. Okay, that was in the 1850s, but many of the Italianate cotton palaces and Gothic glories remain, particularly Manchester Town Hall and the John Rylands Library. 

Ed Glinert is a much-published author, cruise ships speaker and Britain's most prolific tour guide, working in Manchester, London and Liverpool as New Manchester Walks, New London Walks and New Liverpool Walks. He has written more than a dozen books for many major publishers, including The London Compendium (Penguin, 2003), The Manchester Compendium (Penguin, 2008) and 111 Places in Yorkshire You Shouldn’t Miss (Emons, 2021). He has also edited the entire Sherlock Holmes canon for Penguin Classics. He specialises in music (most genres), literature, architecture and art.
