A study day at the Grand in Southport which will demonstrate that Rene Lalique was nothing less than a genius and modern day icon in the world of design.

In the morning we will discover Rene Lalique's career as a student working for the leading Paris houses before becoming one of the most notable and avant-garde jewellers of his day - a designer who broke with tradition and challenged both the wearers and the viewers perception of jewellery at the beginning of the 20th century.

The afternoon session will look at how Lalique effortlessly moved away from precious metals to the medium of glass yet again challenging the material and the market to re-evaluate this modest medium, transforming it into high art for the mass market.

At the end of the afternoon there will be a "show and tell" session when members can bring items not necessarily glass, along for Will to discuss. 

The cost will be £55 which will include include morning coffee, lunch and tea.

A visit to Hutton is a remarkable journey through time. From the medieval Stone Hall to the high Victorian Drawing Room, the rooms represent a succession of historical eras and styles. The rooms contain fine period furniture sitting alongside contemporary ceramics. There are interesting collections of portraits (including – unusually – several by 17th and 18th century women artists), good examples of needlework and tapestries. 

The house is surrounded by spectacular gardens and grounds which were laid out in the 17th Century. They have evolved since then, but the basic elements as shown in engravings from 1705 can still be seen. 

Potfest in the Park  

The original Potfest flagship event showcasing the very best work from 90 selected ceramic artists, chosen from throughout the Uk, Europe and beyond. 

All with very distinctive, individual styles. Set in the magnificent backdrop of Hutton-in-the-Forest on the edge of the beautiful Lake District National Park. 

Potfest in the Park takes place under large marquees on parkland in front of this magnificent country house. The potters’ special competition pieces are displayed on the lawns in front of the house, juxtaposing ancient architecture and modern ceramics.

At Exhibition on Screen, we talk to galleries around the world on a daily basis – big national galleries and smaller regional or local ones. If they are planning an exhibition on an artist we think you may find of interest then we talk to them.  When we heard that to mark 500 years since Bosch died the Noordbrabants Museum in the Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch was organizing what was to be a once-in-a-lifetime show of Hieronymus Bosch’s work we knew we had to be involved.  I went to meet Charles de Mooij, the museum’s director, and he told me that they had managed to secure loans of 17 of Bosch’s 24 surviving paintings and 19 of his 20 extant drawings. It hadn’t happened before and, frankly, won’t happen again.  Bosch is certainly an enigmatic painter but a bit of detective work can reveal an enormous amount. The first confusion is his very name: is it Hieronymus, Jheronimus or Jeroen? Van Aken or Bosch? In short, he was born into the ‘van Aken’ family. He was both Jheronimus and Jeroen depending on whether a document was in Latin or Dutch. The standard Latin name of Hieronymus had this local variant of both Jheronimus or Jeronimus. At some point he took the name of his hometown (‘s-Hertogenbosch is also known as Den Bosch). So that’s why we know him as Hieronymus Bosch. I don’t think the Noordbrabants Museum could possibly have guessed how popular the show was going to be. When we started arranging to film the exhibition, we were scheduled to enter after the show closed at 6pm. Then it became 8pm, then 10pm then midnight – and finally 1am! Not so great for us, of course, as it meant filming from 1am to 8am over a few nights.  Though to be alone with these masterpieces – looking as if they had been painted yesterday – was, as ever, a real privilege.  Director David Bickerstaff faced a challenge to tell this story - I think he has done a wonderful job.   I hope you agree. Come and join us  for a day of Art Decadence.

This year marks the centenary of the birth of Art Deco in 1925 and we are celebrating with a study day  at the Grand on Lord St, the only surviving 1930s cinema building still open to the public in Southport.
Our speaker for the day is Will Farmer who has been an expert on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow for the over 20 years . He is also a director of  Fielding's auction house in   Stourbridge where he regularly takes the rostrum as auctioneer. Will’s passion is 20th  century design and there is no one better to introduce us to the wonderful  world of Art Deco and it’s inspiration and influences. The day will end with an informal  appraisal     session  for members objects.

Pierre Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris which rank among the world’s favourites. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course.       

This stunning film – based on the remarkable Renoir collection at Philadelphia’s Barnes Foundation – explores the artist’s new approach. These later works still provoke extreme reactions – some people are repulsed by them and others seduced. 

Two 20th century titans– Picasso and Matisse are intriguingly among the many artists who were clearly influenced by Renoir’s later direction. JOHN SINGER SARGENT:

John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. It always intrigues me how some artists are so well-known and some seem to have flown under the radar. John Singer Sargent, despite being the most famous portrait artist of the late 19th century, is no longer a household name. Exhibition on Screen, however, has always had the intention of making films not only about the great names – Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Raphael, Vermeer but also those who are deserving of more attention. I’m thinking of our recent films about the impressionist Mary Cassatt and also Tokyo Stories, which looked at the last 400 years of Tokyo-focussed art & artists. As filmmakers, both director David Bickerstaff and I have been thrilled to make this film about Sargent, someone I consider a truly astounding artist. We have wanted to focus on him for a while but the prompt for this particular film was an exhibition that began at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and then travelled to Tate Britain. The exhibition emphasised Sargent’s relationship with fashion, showing the stunning garments he and his sitters decided upon in his beautifully crafted portraits. The film examines how together they worked to present a specific look or personality – much like how so many of us today use social media. It’s a remarkable tale. Suhail Shaikh is a self-taught paper artist. As a little boy in India, his grandmother helped him make his own toys from scratch. Paper and cardboard recovered from discarded packaging was easy, fun and quick to manipulate. From making his own toys, he moved on to making detailed model airplanes.

As an aviation artist who has also had a 20-year career as a professional designer, Suhail is passionate about aviation and has a soft-spot for British aviation achievements. He is fascinated by the stories that form the backdrop to historical aircraft and is an admirer of the design philosophy of the time. Looking beyond the destructive purpose of military aircraft, his creations celebrate the original designers’ instinctive grasp of flight and their pure technical genius.

Paper artist Suhail Shaikh transforms the simple sheet of paper into multidimensional artworks. His work reflects the ideas, thoughts and reactions that arise from his perception of the evolving world around him.

His current exhibition in the Atkison explores the figurative and the abstract in this unique exhibition and step into a space where the artist allows his dreams to become reality as he ‘papers his wishes’.

The Colour Room follows the journey of a determined, working-class woman, Clarice Cliff.

She (Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s - Bursting at the seams with ideas for colours and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks - but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation.

Mary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual, feminine and real, which was a major shift in the way women appeared in art.

Presenting her astonishing prints, pastels and paintings, this film introduces us to the often-overlooked Impressionist whose own career was as full of contradiction as the women she painted. She printed, sketched, and painted dozens of images of mothers and children yet she never married or had children herself. She was a classically trained artist but chose to join a group of Parisian radicals – the Impressionists – a movement that transformed the language of art. The world’s most eminent Cassatt curators and scholars help tell this riveting tale of great social and cultural change; a time when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was completely re-written. Mary Cassatt and her modern women were at the heart of it all.

Eric Ravilious was as compelling and enigmatic as his art. November 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun and the discovery of more than 5000 amazing objects. For this reason, The Atkinson has designated November as Egyptian month and as part of the celebration you are invited to take tea and cake with Mrs Goodison.

Mrs Goodison was the local lady collector largely responsible for the wonderful Egyptian artifacts now on display in the Atkinson. THE DANISH COLLECTOR: DELACROIX TO GAUGUIN  – Exhibition on Screen

For many years no-one was interested in the art of the Impressionists. Artists like Monet, Degas and Renoir were vilified, attacked, and left penniless as a result. Then, something remarkable happened. A new breed of collectors emerged and, before long, they were battling to acquire any work by these new, radical artists that they could find. Amongst them was the visionary Danish businessman Wilhelm Hansen. It was an extraordinary moment in art history; full of drama, intrigue and subterfuge.

Some collectors we may recognise and some we may not, but Hansen amassed a remarkable collection housed at his summer home, Ordrupgaard, on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Exhibition on Screen tells his fascinating story and, with exclusive access to a sell-out exhibition at London’s Royal Academy, brings the extraordinary collection to the big screen.

From Hansen’s beautiful house and gardens at Ordrupgaard to the streets of bohemian Paris, this film takes you on a journey to discover some of the best examples of 19th-century French art ever collected.

Celebrating the Arts at Aintree Racecourse

A Special Interest Day on Wednesday 4th May 2022

Aintree is a famous venue and the day will incorporate its history together with its connection to the world of Art.

The day will be spent in the Princess Royal Suite (fully accessible), which benefits from panoramic views of the racecourse. Our members will also have exclusive access to the Jockey Club 1750 suite incorporating paintings and memorabilia of Aintree’s racing heritage.   This will be conducted in small groups.  The 1750 suite is situated in a separate building with access via 23 stairs with a handrail.

Our lecturer for the day will be Christopher Garibaldi, who will cover the diverse subjects of the fine and decorative arts of horseracing; the paintings of The English Leonardo George Stubbs, the finest English animal painter.  The Italian theme will continue with a lecture on the romantic heroic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

A Morning of Special Interest at The Atkinson

The story of fashion is all about how people embraced the times, altering their fashion depending on wars, recessions and pandemics to suit the materials that were readily available.

Elizabeth Montgomery, Senior Curator, West Cheshire Museums, will present an illustrated talk exploring the Grosvenor Museum's historical costume collection.  This talk will examine some wonderful pieces of clothing in greater detail, from Victorian wedding dresses to 1950s Dior and much in between.

We are very excited to be able to offer our members a Special Event online, in conjunction with The Atkinson, on Thursday 26 November at 10.30 a.m.  We will have an opportunity to enjoy a live talk from the international artist/photographer Paul Kenny about his work and how it has evolved (some of you may remember the Sea and Shore exhibition that Paul was involved with.  There will be a chance to ask questions, and then we will have a 15 minute showing of his latest project  Bun Na Speire  that links moving images to a commissioned score by Richard J. Birkin.  This work was a semi-finalist in the Film Art Festival, Berlin, 2020, and was described by the Curator of the V&A as ‘moving stills’.  This will be the first showing in the North West, so after a stimulating talk sit back, relax and enjoy - all in the comfort of your home.

Study Morning at The Atkinson

Join the Atkinson's curatorial team for an exploration of some of the highlights of the collection, as well as objects and paintings that are waiting for their moment in the limelight. The Atkinson holds over 3,500 artworks and nearly 30,000 items of social and natural history. We will look behind the scenes at a range of objects that were once highly valued and have fallen into obscurity, as well as previously unknown masterpieces that have been identified and restored to their former glory. There will be a chance to hear about, and see, some exceptional objects.

LUCIAN FREUD: A SELF-PORTRAIT – Exhibition on Screen

The exhibition, a collaboration between the Royal  Academy of Arts and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, brings together over 50 works in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself.

     Freud’s self-portraits, spanning nearly seven decades, give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter. When seen together, they represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation.

Lesley Raven, programme leader of the Fashion Art Direction degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University, together with students from the course, will present a talk on fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.  This will cover three themes: past, present and future. 

The talk will be followed by a guided tour of the exhibition, Westwood, which looks back at Vivienne Westwood’s designs and campaigns, illustrating what makes her ‘The Grand Dame’ of fashion today.

Study Morning at The Atkinson

Nahem Shoa is a contemporary painter who trained at Manchester School of Art and the Royal Drawing School. He is best known for his series of striking large-scale ‘Giant Heads’, portraits of black sitters, some of which are over fifteen times life size. In an effort to address the lack of positive images of black people in public art collections, Shoa has donated many of his paintings to British art galleries and has recently given a portrait to The Atkinson.

Nahem Shoa will present a lecture and guided tour of the ‘Black Presence’ exhibition, which exhibits his work next to historic portraits by major British artists including Allan Ramsay and Joshua Reynolds as well as leading contemporaries such as Sonia Boyce.

An Exhibition Preview at the Atkinson

Bessie Downes made a unique record of plant species found along the coast from Southport to Formby. Her beautiful watercolour illustrations provide us with a snapshot of the botany of our coast from the 1890s and into the early 20th century. One cannot appreciate 20th century art without undertaking the significance and genius of Paul Cezanne.

Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery, London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art, Washington and Musee d'Orsay, Paris and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cezanne lived and worked. 

As part of the Adventures in Egypt Exhibition Emma Anderson will discuss the role of Women as archaeologists and Egyptologists in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

The talk will include an examination of the work of prioneering Egyptologist Margaret Benson, the first woman to lead an archaeological dig in Egypt.
